Burly Fork Lowering Kit For Harley Big Twin 1980-2013
Lowboy Stance: Burly Fork Lowering Kit for Harley Big Twin (1980–2013)
The Burly Fork Lowering Kit (often called the Lowboy kit) is a highly versatile front suspension component designed to drop the front end of a vast array of Harley-Davidson Big Twin models from 1980 through 2013.
This kit primarily targets the numerous models that utilize the 41mm Showa fork tube diameter, which was the standard Big Twin fork for decades.
🔑 Key Features and Drop Amount
Part Number: The primary part number for the 41mm forks in this range is typically B28-100.
Lowering Options: The kit includes components that allow the installer to choose between a 1-inch or 2-inch drop in front ride height.
Progressive Rate Springs: A central feature is the inclusion of progressively wound fork springs. This design is essential for lowered setups: it provides a comfortable, soft initial feel but quickly stiffens to resist harsh bottoming with the reduced travel.
Improved Handling: The stiffer, progressive springs also help reduce front-end “dive” during hard braking.
Broad Fitment (41mm Forks)
The Burly B28-100 kit covers the 41mm fork models across the following Big Twin platforms in this era:
Touring (FLH/FLT): Fits most models from 1980 through 2013 (e.g., Road King, Electra Glide, Street Glide).
Note: Burly specifically warns: Do Not lower FLH models 2″. (The maximum safe drop for Touring models is 1″).
Softail (FXST/FLST): Fits most models from 1984 through 2013 (e.g., Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Softail Standard).
Dyna: Fits Dyna Wide Glide (FXDWG) models from 1992 through 2005.
Installation Notes (Drop-In Design)
While called a “Drop-In” system, installation for 41mm forks is more involved than just replacing the top spring.
Requires Partial Disassembly: The process requires removing the fork oil, the fork cap, and the damper rod bolt at the bottom of the fork leg to replace the rebound spring with the supplied longer unit (or stacking both springs for the 2″ drop).
Adjusting Drop:
1-inch Reduction: Uses the longer rebound spring supplied in the kit.
2-inch Reduction: Uses both the supplied longer rebound spring and the stock rebound spring stacked together (Do not use this option on Touring models).
No Complete Seal Replacement: The easy part is that you usually do not need to remove the fork seals or completely disassemble the fork leg from the triple trees.
Important Trade-offs
Ground Clearance: Lowering the front end reduces ground clearance and, combined with a lowered rear, will reduce the bike’s available lean angle.
Jiffy Stand: If you lower both the front and rear, you may need to bend or replace your jiffy stand to ensure the bike is stable when parked.
Burly Fork Lowering Kit For Harley Big Twin
These Fork Lowering Kits allow for the bike to be easily lowered to the ground but allows for enough clearance where you won’t be tanking any damage. Progressively wound springs deliver a compliant ride, yet resist bottoming. Kit includes components to lower bike up to 2 inches.
Features:
Requires disassembly of forks
Lowers your forks up to 2″ (one inch on FLT/FLHT models)
