Barnett Scorpion Clutch: Precision Power Delivery for the Twin Cam Era
The Barnett Scorpion Clutch is the premier drivetrain upgrade for 2006–2010 Harley-Davidson Twin Cam models. During this era, Harley transitioned to the 6-speed transmission and increased engine displacement, often pushing the stock diaphragm clutch to its breaking point. The Scorpion system replaces the weak OEM internals with a CNC-machined billet aluminum assembly that more than doubles the torque capacity, making it the essential choice for performance-minded riders.
Centrifugal Stability and Surface Area
The Scorpion kit features a significantly larger clutch pack than the factory unit. By utilizing a stack of Carbon Fiber friction plates and tempered steel drive plates, it provides a much larger contact patch. This increased surface area allows the clutch to lock up firmly under heavy acceleration and dissipate heat more effectively, preventing the “glazing” that leads to clutch fade during aggressive riding or in heavy traffic.
Tunable Six-Spring Pressure Plate
One of the most popular features of the Scorpion is its adjustability. Instead of the “all or nothing” feel of a single diaphragm spring, the Scorpion uses six heavy-duty coil springs. Barnett includes three different sets of color-coded springs with varying tension rates:
- Street/Commuter: Provides a lighter-than-stock lever pull with improved holding power.
- Performance: Ideal for Stage II and Stage III builds with upgraded cams.
- Race/Heavy Duty: Maximum pressure for high-horsepower engines or heavy-duty touring and sidecar use.
High-Strength Billet Construction
Every Scorpion pressure plate is precision-machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum. This provides a much more stable and “true” surface than the factory cast-iron parts, which can warp under high heat. This stability ensures that the clutch disengages cleanly and consistently, making it significantly easier to find neutral and reducing the mechanical “clunk” often associated with Harley gear changes.
Fitment and Compatibility (2006–2010)
This kit is a direct “bolt-in” replacement for the internal clutch components of the following models:
- Dyna: 2006–2010 (Super Glide, Street Bob, Low Rider, Wide Glide, Fat Bob).
- Softail: 2007–2010 (Heritage, Fat Boy, Night Train, Deluxe, etc.).
- Touring: 2007–2010 (Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide, Electra Glide).
- Note: Designed for use in the stock clutch shell. Compatible with both hydraulic and cable-actuated systems.
