Barnett Extra Plate Kit: More Surface Area, More Power
The Barnett Extra Plate Clutch Kit is engineered to solve the most common performance bottleneck in the Harley-Davidson primary: limited surface area. Designed for 1990–2022 Big Twin and Sportster models (excluding M8 models with Assist & Slip clutches), this kit re-engineers the clutch stack to provide a massive increase in grip. By fitting an additional friction and steel plate into the same space as your OEM pack, Barnett allows your clutch to hold more power without requiring an excessively stiff pressure plate spring.
Increased Torque Capacity and Heat Management
When you increase your engine’s displacement or add a high-lift cam, the stock clutch is often the first component to fail. The Extra Plate Kit increases the effective friction surface area by over 11%. This extra area spreads the load more evenly and dissipates heat more effectively, which prevents the “glazing” and “fading” that occurs during aggressive riding or heavy-duty towing.
Choose Your Friction Material
Barnett offers this kit in two specialized compounds to match your riding style:
- Kevlar (Aramid) Fiber: The go-to choice for street performance and longevity. It provides a smooth, linear engagement and is highly resistant to wear, making it perfect for high-mileage touring.
- Carbon Fiber: Designed for high-heat, high-stress environments. Carbon fiber provides a more aggressive “bite” and is the preferred choice for drag racing or engines producing high horsepower and torque.
Eliminate the “Judder Spring”
Most Barnett Extra Plate Kits are designed to eliminate the OEM “judder” (damper) spring and seat. Replacing these thin, fragile components with full-sized friction and steel plates not only increases the holding power but also creates a more consistent and predictable lever feel, especially when taking off from a stop.
Fitment and Compatibility (1990–2022)
This versatile kit fits a wide range of Harleys with the standard diaphragm-style clutch:
- Big Twin (1990–2017): Fits Evolution and Twin Cam models (Softail, Dyna, Touring) using the standard clutch basket.
- Sportster (1991–2022): Fits all XL 883 and 1200 models. (Commonly used to fix the “grenade plate” issue on Sportsters).
- Note: Not for use on 2017-later Milwaukee-Eight models with “Assist & Slip” clutches or 2013-later CVO models.
