The Öhlins STX Classic Rear Shocks are a fantastic way to bring world-class performance and comfort to your Harley-Davidson Touring model (fitting a very wide range from 1990 up to the current 2025 models, though specific part numbers may vary slightly by year).

The “STX Classic” generally refers to the Öhlins S36E model. It’s the essential Öhlins experience: superior damping and construction without the complexity of external adjustment knobs.
Öhlins STX Classic (S36E) Features

The S36E model is designed for the rider who wants a massive jump in performance and comfort but prefers a “set-it-and-forget-it” setup, relying on Öhlins’ internal precision valving.

STX Technology (S-Single Tube): This is Öhlins’ well-proven, high-performance monotube design. The “E” stands for Emulsion type, meaning the shock oil and nitrogen gas are mixed. This simple, effective design delivers vastly better damping consistency and feel than stock shocks.

36mm Piston Diameter: The large 36mm piston (S36) provides superior fluid flow and damping control, helping the shock react quickly and smoothly to road imperfections.

Adjustable Preload: The most crucial adjustment for Touring models is included. The shocks feature threaded preload adjusters and a billet tool, allowing you to easily set the proper “sag” to account for riding solo, with a passenger, or with a fully loaded bike.

Custom Valving: The compression and rebound damping are precisely set internally using Öhlins’ racing-derived shim stack, specifically tuned for the weight and handling characteristics of the Harley-Davidson FL platform.

Quality & Serviceability: Built with hard-anodized, precision CNC-machined components. Critically, all Öhlins shocks are fully serviceable, repairable, and re-valvable, ensuring a lifetime of performance.

If you’ve spent any time around a race track, you know the name Ohlins. As the entry level offering in the Ohlins line, the S36E provides a hugely improved ride over stock without all of the bells and whistles that drive cost up. The S36E rear shocks utilize a 36mm piston immersed in oil and controlled by a specially tuned shim stack backed up with a nitrogen charge. Good solid suspension with no frills.
While you won’t get the rebound and compression adjustments found on higher end shocks, the S36E offers the feel and performance of a premium shock without breaking the bank. If you are a set-it and forget-it type of rider who doesn’t want to mess around with knobs and dials the S36E might be right up your alley!

Note: Emulsion shocks are non-adjustable and will be valved for a rider weight of 150-250lbs. Ohlins recommends adjustable shocks like the STX Performance for riders outside of that range.

Fitment Notes & Exceptions

Depending on model, your stock shock length is 12″ to 13″
Shock lengths are measured fully extended, eyelet to eyelet on centers
A change in height at one end of the bike may require a change at the other
Prior to purchasing shocks that are different than your OEM length, please verify that wheel and suspension travel can be altered without causing clearance issues to the swingarm, axle, frame, tire, fender, chain/belt and guard, and exhaust
